about

Long ago, there existed a fragmented tribe of beet farmers, on a remote island in East Asia. Most of the year they stayed indoors, waiting for season to hit. But every year, in the early spring, they were seen looping soil, clearing rocks, sampling nitrogen, balancing levels. The peculiar thing was, they did not quite speak to each other, as some imagined they might. Each was preoccupied with learning the ins and outs of their own terrain. The sun and moon traded places many times. Those beets started to take distinct shape, develop taste.

Time passed. Cities rose and grew, consuming the land like fire. Convenience was becoming king, and this sent a ready-made ricochet across the food industry. The food got flashier, but nobody felt so great afterwards. The town’s residents would not come to admit it. But everyone, between byte bits, felt that a great sickness was around the corner.

One day, it struck. Hard and fast. The farmers’ friends and family could not bear to tell them, that the time for cooking was coming to an end. “Get a real job,” they lamented.

The farmers listened. But they wouldn’t have it. Each intuited that beets, eaten raw, stored ample nutrition to combat the plague on the island. For the first time, they decided to hold a meeting. Though each of the growers were used to working alone, they gathered. And then they reached consensus—a farmer’s market. A collective tribute to the island they called home; a testament of hard-hitting habit in less-than-healthy times.

You now hold in your hands the only remaining relic. Though much of history will be lost in the waves of time, this artifact was not. Some may tell you that none of it ever happened, that you’re imagining another island, other beets. No matter. One fact remains undisputed among historians dedicated to preserving story—there were only five farmers, and they called their market TYPE A.
